In three weeks Brian and I will be settling in...our new home, Sicchez, Piura. In fact, we´ll almost be Ecuadorians! About 1,500 inhabitants live in Sicchez, it´s tucked in the Andean foothills and is very green. They grow sugar cane, coffee, bananas, and do small animal husbandry for income. And very hot at 4 degrees south latitude (with a rainy season to boot). In theory, I´ll be working with the municipality on agroecology and reforestation. Brian will ensure the health of all inhabitants. Our tentative family consists of a couple living with their parents. We´ll have electricity, running water a few days a week, and a public phone. All info points to the fact that we´ll have a relatively large room with it´s own entrance with a space to cook (we´d have to buy the stove and stuff - which is generally cheap). If you´re interested in visiting us, be prepared - it´s a 7 hour bus ride from the capital city of Piura. Next week Brian and I will go to Sicchez for seven days to meet our community contacts and stay with our family.
We´re extremely excited and also incredibally overwhelmed right now. The training calendar leaves little room to feel human sometimes, the ¨you are a volunteer 24-7¨mentality. Lots, lots, lots of assignments and requirements.
Aunt Joyce, thanks a million for your letters!! Can you post a comment and tell me what days are good to call you at home during the evening?

A BIG TEXAS HOWDY to Brian & Angela
It sounds like you are starting to become acclimated to Peru. Your adventures sound fascinating. However, it appears that the Peace Corp needs to gain a better understanding of the concept of a 40 hour work week. Otherwise, there will be precious little time for the two of you to persue the really cool stuff like sightseeing and mountaineering. I know an excellent attorney who specializes in "labor" law. I could hook you up with her if you like. It sounds like Angela in addition to becoming a Spanish teacher upon her return to the States may also have a future as stand-up comedian on the Latino tv stations. Who says that there is no monetary future for Peace Corp volunteers?
Take Care,
Uncle Greg
Dear Angela & Brian,
I managed to lose the email with your blog link so I am a bit tardy in corresponding. I love your newsy blog accounts and the photos, and I admire the way you are settling in to life in and the culture of Peru. The warm hospitality you are experiencing does not surprise me. It calls to my mind many wonderful memories of wonderful people and that same hospitality I enjoyed many years ago during my time in the missions around Oaxaca, Mexico and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. I look forward to following your adventures via your blog.

Hey Guys
Nice blog. You have some cool pics. It sounds like you are having fun and keeping yourselves busy.
I can relate to you being in a third world country. At times I feel that way in my classroom. I also have a language barrier with all of the slang and southern accents here in Richmond.
I am glad your Spanish is improving. Angie, I heard your Dad, besides being Jewish, may also have some Latino in him.
Brian, I bet you will miss all of the turkey, football, and beer in a few days. I will have a shot of gravy and wash it down with a cold one for you.
Of course, Megan still plans on being your parents interpreter when they come to visit. We will see what happens....
Love Ya!
Uncle gil
